What's Coming up for Community Marine Education

Creating stewards of the marine environment...Priceless!

Here are some of the costs associated with some of our marine education activities, programs or tank upkeep at The Pier Aquarium:

A Surf-n-Turf class for 20 students $80
A five-day summer marine adventure for one camper $200
Feeding our 4-ft. long green moray eel for one year $500
One science café (SciCafé St. Petersburg) $1,000
Ocean in Motion traveling touch tank at one school for six weeks $1,550
Feeding our Coral Catsharks for one year $3,000
Creating seawater for water changes for all tanks for one year $5,000
Maintaining our coral reef tank* for one year $8,600

TOTAL $19,930

* food, electricity, equipment, water and synthetic salt

Add up the numbers, and the total is a fraction of The Pier Aquarium's annual operating budget. Your support helps keep 400 marine animals fed, healthy and well-cared for. Our activities reach more than 65,000 visitors, 15,000 students (of all ages) and 500 SciCafé attendees.

A donation from you today will support The Pier Aquarium until we reopen in Dec. 2012 at John's Pass Village in Madeira Beach as Secrets of the Sea Marine Exploration Center and Aquarium.

Invest in marine education for the community and be a part of our mission to "enhance the public's understanding of the value and fragility of the local and global marine environment through research, education and personal experiences."

With your donation, we will continue to to make The Pier Aquarium a destination for exploration and discovery and make it possible to us to give children and adults opportunities to develop and satisfy their curiosity, touch critters, feed baby sharks and dream of their futures.

BOOK NOOK BY THE BAY & FRESH FISH THEATER

We guarantee that book worms (kids and adults who like to read books) are very welcome to join the fish lovers at our First Saturday of the Month family event scheduled from 10:30-noon. Book Nook features a special book, a guest reader (could be the author of the featured book) or performance of the book, craft time to make your Fresh Fish Theater "actors troupe," marine education facts and perhaps another surprise activity.

Feb. 4 All the Way to the Ocean by Joel Harper

What happens when you throw a candy wrapper and plastic bottle in the gutter? James doesn't believe that it will go all the way to the ocean. His friend Isaac warns him about the consequences of his littering. There begins the adventures of James and Isaac as they learn about the harmful effects of storm drain pollution, and in turn, spread the word to their friends and the rest of their school. Helping the kids along this journey are a concerned Crane from the coast line, a surprisingly insightful Surfer Dude and James' Mom.

Book Nook by the Bay is presented by The Pier Aquarium and sponsored by Beach House Suites by the Don CeSar.
